My pair of Sailfin Mollies have had a few black & yellow babies. Has anyone heard of this coloration before? The babies don't look anything like their parents but seem to be keeping their strange color. Their father is a Silver Sailfin and their mother is a wild/ native Sailfin (normally females are a dull beige with yellow bellies and males have blue & orange fins). The black & yellow babies tend to have bright yellow on their mouths/heads while the rest of their body is a grayish to dark black color.

Is it normal for baby mollies to look this different from their parents?

i suppose... its kinda like a mother calico and a white dad cat... you get all sorts of colors :D lol (most)

with mollies, there is really not telling what colors you are going to get when they breed.
Especially when the batch could have been from the previous male that courted the female.:)

Here are two pictures I took earlier today. They didn't turn out well so I will try again later. In the first picture, there are two black & yellow babies hiding at the base of the plant on the right hand side. In the second picture, there's one off to the left but she's a bit blurry. The ones in the pictures are only about 6 months old, and not very big.

What people here call leopard mollies. Livebearers are known to crossbreed so it's not surprising the fry get mixed results in their genes.:)

Are Leopard Mollies hard to find? I've never seen anything like this before. I also did a Google Image search and the only pictures I pulled up under "Leopard Molly" were either Dalmatian Mollies or bright orange mollies. Will my babies eventually lose their distinct yellow head/black body and become predominately orange?

I have all sorts of different colors. I started off with mostly dalmations, with a black male and a creamsicle female. I have a bunch now that have the dalmation pattern with a creamsicle coloring, i.e. mostly orange with silver and white spots. I then added a greyish-orange sailfin male, and have some babies now that are greyish-yellow with vertical bars. That might change as they get a bit older though.
