I just switched from gravel to Black Diamond Blasting Sand, medium grit, and am quite pleased with the look. A 50 lb bag is $7.99 Tractor Supply Company. Still need to aquascape, but I think the black sand looks pretty cool. Here's a pic:

I too have Black Sand, Tahitian Moon--This is before I heard about Black Diamond Blasting Sand. I mixed it with ECO complete. The black sand (IMO) brings out the best color in fishes.

I think so too, which is why I chose it. Tahitian Moon is what my LFS had on hand, I had heard some good things about it, and wanted to give it a try. Work only carries "Petco Brand" black sand, which is just painted/epoxy coated sand that eventually sheds the coating. I haven't found the other alternatives locally yet, with the exception of white pool filter sand at Home Depot.

That little digital thermometer is dirt cheap on Amazon. I'm going to be buying a few more.

I found one at another Petco store, so picked it up to test it out, and I really like it. Been thinking about getting another one for the other side of the tank. My monster tinfoil has broken 3 glass thermometers, so the digital one is perfect. I'm going to start looking at other sources for aquarium supplies because of the appalling lack of customer service my general manager (and a couple other coworkers) demonstrated the past couple weeks as I was picking up supplies for my 180. My LFS might charge a little more, but they don't treat you like crap and pointedly ask if you can wait until it's more convenient for them in order to buy supplies/fish.

Are your plants in pots? or are they buried very deep?

They're just buried in the sand. I pushed them in till I couldn't see roots.

Pushed some root tabs in and have been using Flourish 3 times a week and Flourish Excel daily.

I need to find a way to increase the lighting. Right now I have 2 strips fluorescent lights with 18" bulbs. One is a daylight flourescent and the other is a plant bulb.

But with the pentagon tank, the lid is really goofy, so I am kinda stuck with it the way it is, unless I custom build something.
