My late Betta, ToddOrBurt, was calm and simmered down after a little bit after I added some wild form guppies to his 10 gallon. He got along with them fine, ignored them for the most part besides a couple of short chases that lasted only a couple of seconds and was given up.

Maybe he was just special? I kept him by my bed and he would come over to greet me whenever he saw me. Never flared at me.

But enough reminissing.

When I get another betta, and if he happens to be docile like my last betta, who would make okay tank mates? Something pretty and on the more interesting side, not like cories, would be nice.

Any suggestions? I like killifish...

well i think you were lucky with ToddOrBurt, generally bettas will atack anything that they considered as competition or a threat to their territory. any sort of tetra's should be fine, neon or cardinal tetras are pretty to look at and too small for the betta to feel threatened by. any fish with bright colours and a similar type of tail that flairs out will be attacked by your betta, it's in their nature.

if you are interested in bottom feeders look into ancistrus or khuli loaches, they are very intereting and fun to look at.

Fish I 've kept with bettas successfully.
- Glowlight tetras.
- Cherry barbs.
- Kuhli loaches.
-Cardinal tetras.
- Clown plecos.

Do not get a golden panchax ( or maybe any related killifish?) if you get killifish, they will fight viciously with a betta.

I would say that it really depends on the individual betta male whether it will be compatible with the fish in question. If you have the space (ie. another tank), you might be able to test out some species of fishes and see whether they are compatible. Bottom feeders usually are best when keeping aggressive surface-dwellers. If bottom feeders aren't hat you would like to have, then you would be able to see if tetras or other mid-level swimmers are compatible (rasboras, ... I think that's all that I can think of).

I really don't want tetras and cories and plecos. You guys are just telling me common fish which I don't want. I've had all those before and/or already have then in one of my other tanks.

There has to be more out of the ordinary fish out there that would fit in.

Understood. Maybe look into these fish?..Not sure if they are compatible with bettas though...throwing out some suggestions..
- Freshwater flounders. I've seen these before sticking on LFS tank walls..cute.
- Farlowella/twig catfish. Sorta unusual catfishes.
-Glassfish ( the normal un-dyed kind.)
