when I turned the lights on this morning my betta was curled up nestled in my chain sword. Is this common behavior? He seemed quite irrated that I disturbed him when I prodded him with the net to see if he was dead. I couldn't see him breathing.
Sounds perfectly normal to me! Bettas tend to be all over the place when resting up at night and you really shouldn't worry about it. It is only if that is daytime behavior then it isn't normal. My brother's betta used to sleep inside the hollow handles of his vase decoration lol and he'll come up occationally for air. Just make sure that during the day, he's active and eating well. But overall, soundsn like you have a happy and healthy betta.
My betta loves lounging day and night on the dwarf sag plants and crypts... also seems to enjoy wedging himself head-down in the anacharis forest! He'll hang like that for a minute and then do a flip and float up for a sip of air. Bettas are such great fish with huge personalities!
For an air-breathing fish, bettas really seem to be all over the tank! I have a ten gallon set up with driftwood and terra cota cave/tube which was supposed to be for the dwarf cories I'm planning to get. But my betta adores poking around under the wood and hanging in the tube. He let's the flow press him against the driftwood at the front of the tank, looking like a sunbather or someone getting a really good massage, lol!
Yep they are all different I have three bettas. My oldest seems to sleep more on his silk plant but in the a.m. he is all over the place because he knows he gets fed then. My other bettas I think are younger so they seem a bit more active but at night I do see them either retire to their caves or silk plants.
