Well to my surprise i woke up early this morning to find my pair of Betta Channoides missing during feeding time...

Upon searching around i noticed the pair entangled together, so threw my go pro underwater to see if i could catch anything on film, and after looking through the footage, i saw glimpses of the female spitting her eggs out, and the male quickly trying to snatch them back up...

Will try and edit the video sometime over the next few days to see if there are any decent shots to upload...

In the mean time, just curious to know will the fry (if any survive) eat frozen baby brine shrimp once free swimming? And do i need to separate them from the parents?

But seen as i never conditioned the male beforehand, im not sure how many if any fry will survive...

^ Thanks, it was a complete fluke they started breeding so quickly... Although i did purposely rearrange the tank after reading that they preferred to have having a lot of root structures in their surroundings... so maybe that helped a little in getting them to get a little frisky...

Since i didnt want to start a new thread just wanted to ask, if my male is currently holding eggs in his mouth, should i avoid doing a water change till either the eggs hatch or get eaten?

Or is it safe to do a small water change of say around 10-20%

I'd hold up on water changes. As for first fry foods, frozen brine shrimp will not do it. The smallest golden pearls will work as will V-Eels.

Very cool!

^ thanks for the info, i guess i better try and get some fry food just incase the male does actually incubate the eggs long enough to hatch...

Although as of right now, im thinking he may end up eating them, since during feeding yesterday i saw him swimming around with a mouth full of eggs as if tempted to try an eat some bloodworms..

So will have to wait and see what happens i guess?

Well? What happened? Tell me you got fry!!!!

If this was a first spawn don't feel bad if he ate them.

To be honest, i havent seen the male in a few days now so im hoping he may still be incubating the eggs, since the female i see quite often...

And i think i read that the male will hold the eggs for around 10-15 days before live fry are released... So by that account still have about 2-4 days before i may see any possible fry?

I breed betta albimarginata

It takes about 3 weeks for a holding male to come back out with out any fry for mine.
I do larger water changes while males are holding, mine breed in a 65g planted tank, some times water changes are as large as 60% depending on the day. ( I have 10 breeding males 4-6 females and about 20 juvies currently)

My fry eat anything small enough to fit in there mouth's.

the ones i breed rarely seem to eat the fry if they are well fed, but pulling a holding male the last few days before he spits and having him do it in a breeder box full of something like java moss works really well.

^ thanks for the tips...

From what i've read they say the channoides males on average hold the eggs for between 10 days to around 20 days max on average...

At which point i should supposedly see him release the fry... So still got my fingers crossed something will happen before the times up...

But naturally, being a fairly heavily planted 60G, it maybe a bit hard to find any fry even if they do make it?
