most people with bamboos find it beneficial to feed their shrimp. If you have a high bio-load, you may get away with no supplemental feeding, but I think it kinda stinks to make them eat only leftovers and poop particles. I would recommend about twice a week putting some crushed flakes in the filter outflow, or using filter-feeding vertebrate food like plankton, or even fry food.
They're awesome shrimp. Extremely peaceful, help reduce algae (by eating floating spores and cells), and develop a rich red color when happy/healthy. They do get quite large, though, about 5" so I would recommend at least 30 gallon tank. I've seen them about 3", as kcooley said, but that is the max size listed at www.petshrimp.com
I really enjoyed mine until he jumped out. They can be escape artists, and will usually try to leave the tank if water quality is poor. So clean water is a must.
since you brought up the idea, i went to petco and bought one last night for $5... never seen them for less than $20. but he is about 1 1/2" in my QT tank for right now.
i had one bout a month ago but he died nothin seemed to bother him tho and he seemed to be doing great so they get to around 3 inches. Can you beleave i got mine for $3.99 at petco?!?!
I have 4 in my planted 125 with 6 discus, and they seem to cohabitate very well. However I am perplexed over the fact that 2 are bright pink and the other 2 are dull brown. The duller ones are smaller, so perhaps it is age thing.
