Well, after 12 years of cat ownership, it happened: my kitties have fleas. I'm currently sporting 22 "active" bites (fresh and itchy) and over 30 "healing" bites. My hubby and daughter have no bites at all. I've bathed the cats, treated with Advantage, vacuumed the carpets and furniture 3x daily (flea collar in the bag, per the vet's rec), treated the carpets/upholstery/everythingfabric with home flea treatment and washed all the hard floors with a partial bleach solution. 8 days later, I'm still getting bites. I've taken to wearing Off! Deep woods in my own home. I have a small child (she's 17 months) who is all over everything, and makes the idea of bombing completely overwhelming (not to mention the tanks). I am at my wits end. Does anyone have any treatments that have worked successfully in their own home? I'm desperate!

I had that problem years ago with 2 good-size dogs in the house. IME Frontline Plus is the best flea treatment because it stops them from producing fertile eggs as well as killing them. Ever since I started using it the dogs have been flea-free as far as I can tell.

be sure to change the vacuum bags after each use.

Frontline worked for a while on my cats then suddenly stopped working, now we use Revolution which is a godsend. It is a once a month spot treatment, but in my experience, tends to last 2 months plus. Advantage has never worked for us.

we just got rid of a complete infestation. the neighbors moved in next door with their dogs and brought them with em. We bombed, and used carpet powder. We now sprinkle borax every other day and vacuum. The cats have advantage, and they seem to be doing fine. no fleas to report.

After working with shelter animals for quite a while, my personal opinion is that Revolution is the VERY best as far as how well it works for cats. I was never as impressed by advantage. Another thing you can do is get the Capstar pill for your kitty which will kill all the fleas and eggs currently on her. It wont stop the infestation but it will make her more comfortable for the time. Borax is another good way to kill fleas, you just want to make sure that you vaccuum it up before allowing the cat or your child to crawl/walk around on the floor as consuming it would be poisonous to them. I am pretty sure you could find the way to treat with borax by calling your vet, or by googling it. Good luck. :)

A mixture of vinegar and water (50/50) sprayed on furniture and bedding will drive off the fleas. Also a mixture of tea tree oil (Pimafix) and lemon oil will kill fleas as well as also driving them off.

This seems to be he year of the flea. Everyone I have met complains about infestations, even those without pets!

its the heat and humidity that is making a harvest crop also for ticks,..

i have had good luck with a light at night on the carpet that you seem to know has the most on it and a solution of dish soap and water they jump at the bright light and fall into the water and die

You could add the tea tree and Lemon, and or Lavender oil (the essential oils) to some Borax, sprinkle it over the carpets and vacuum it. The fleas do not like the tea tree or the Lavender. Cedar is another that they do not like, but I wouldn't recommend it with the little one around.
