Asian Arowana Conservation

it's a cool site promoting an endangered species... hence them being illegal in the US. :)

Yes, not trying to spam. I think I assume that most fish keepers know what an Asian Arowana is. If you don't know, please see the wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_arowana

The site is promoting a program that would generate conservation money by charging import fees to import captive bred fish into the United States. That's the elevator version.

See the site and join if you're interested in more details or helping out.

Thanks.

So, should we, as responsible fishkeepers, keep Asian Arowana, I've seem them on sales in the UK.

How would we ensure they were captive bred instead of wild caught?

To be exported from, or imported to a country that is a member of CITES, the fish need to be registered/captive bred fish that are implanted with a passive RF tag which holds a unique ID number for that fish. The fish are scanned at ports of export and import by officials.

By generating funds through the sales of captive bred fish, and applying those funds to conservation efforts on remaining wild stocks, we would be helping conserve the fish in the wild, and get the opportunity to keep a rare and beautiful animal.

Captive bred Asian arowanas are legal in most of the EU. They are legal for trade under CITES. They are illegal in the USA because of our Endangered Species Act. Most of this information is on http://www.savethearowana.com
