Are there "runts of the litter" in the fish world?

On April 18 I discovered molly fry in with my mature fish and moved them into my 5 gallon tank (which was cycled, fully planted, heated, filtered). Of the orginal 10, a few died, a few were given away, and two grew to about 1" and were moved into another 10gal.

I've been feeding them once or twice daily (three time a day early on, less now) with the recommended Hikari "first bites," small flakes, and occasional treats (brine shrimp, peas, algae wafer, shrimp pellet).

The two remaining in the tank (I think they both are males) are so small that I'm beginning to wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something wrong with them. The smallest one is still only about 1/2" long; he doesn't appear to have grown at all in weeks. Is there such a thing as "the runt of the litter" in the fish world? The other molly is only slightly larger, but he still appears to be growing.

Water temp 75-78F, Amonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20, ph 7.6, my water is hard (250) and total alkalinity tests at 180. I do 50 - 60% water changes weekly.

Any information/advice would be appreciated.

sure there are.

Every species has runts and weaklings. These form the food for the primary predators.

Here is what I have discovered. When you have a tank full of fry, the more agressive ones will out compete the weaker ones, which then become the runts. As I move fish to other tanks or ship out the bigger ones, the competition decreases and the runts mostly catch up.

I have about 15 green terror fry born at the same time and they range from
less than .5 inch to over 1.5 inches id sy the largest is about 5 times the size of the smallest

I concur with two tank

the more aggressive fish will out compete the less aggressiveand grow faster.

seperate themout to give the smaller fish a chanceor let nature take its course.

you will find runts and defects... pretty normal I would say

what does it look like when people mate? :p: ;)

Thanks everyone. Maybe I'll keep my tiniest fish and breed xtra-tiny mollies lol...perfect for those of us who can't keep large tanks but keep wanting more fish :)
