I was wondering if any of you have an aquaclear 70 (for 30-70g) running on a 29 gallon tank. Should I get an AC50 or an AC70 for a tank of african cichlids? Would it be worth spending an extra 10 bucks on a larger filter? I would really like your opinioon!

I would always stick with the mantra that there is no such thing as over filtration, so spend as much as you can afford on your filter. You will be glad you did in the long run.

my personal rule of thumb is 10X tank volume circulated per hour. That means that on my 29 gal, I try to have at least 250 gph of filtration. As rosswake said, you can never have too much. The cut-off point is where the current becomes so strong that your fish can't stay still and are getting knocked around.

So for your 29, I'd go with the AquaClear 70 (300gph) or 50 (200 gph). The bigger one is probably better, especially for cichlids which can be messy eaters. :)

the 70 would be fine but i think always better to have 2 filters.so 2 small ones over one large one.make sense.

I agree with jkost.

I use 2 AC 70s on my 55 gallon tank.

The 75 has a XP3 and a Penguin 200 biowheel.

The 20 gallon has an old Penguin, I think a 175? hell I don't remember since I quit buying the refills.

I'll probably move the 200 to the 20 and buy another AC for the 75 eventually.
