i posted about this a while ago, and i got some suggestions.

my aquaclear 110 power filter makes an annoying mechanical/grinding noise, and it just drives me crazy. i wish this thing was silent like others have said theirs are.

some suggestions i got were to ditch the lid (did that), make sure the intake tube is in right (did that), remove the motor and rise out the impeller/magnet/well (did that) and none of these have helped!

what can i do!!!!!! i'm getting desperate.

i put the camera next to the filter for this video, so you can hear the noise it makes:

The only thing left is to try a new impeller. If that should fail to quiet I would think the energizer is also worn scarred and allowing for impeller wobble. It too is replaceable. Also may want to contact Hagen for warranty if it is fairly new.

its definitley still under warranty, because i just got it for Christmas.

i guess i'll email hagen and see what they can do about it. are they pretty good with customer service?

If it was pruchases from a local store, box it up and take it back. Tell them it's not working properly. They should give you a replacement and that will be alot quicker then contacting hagen.

yeah i might do that. but what about the filter media thats in it, its used and its just a little bit nasty. just dry it out and put it back in the box?

i guess my tank would be alright for the few hours it would take to get the new filter right?

a new impeller is $15 at the cheapest i found it. a bit pricey when it may not solve the problem. most of the ac filters i know of make that noise just not as loud. all power filters make that type of noise ( the only truely silent filter i have ever come across were canister). i found that the noise is more likely due to the metal shaft that holds the impeller in place becoming bent. those are cheap to get too. if you bought this filter recently, you should just return it or ask them to trade it for another one. also, having a sand bottom tank (i dont know if you do) is asking for it to occur sooner or later.

Oh, mine does that all the time, it is somewhat old though(Aquaclear 70? Not sure, but it's rated for 70 gallons, 3+yrs).
It comes and it goes.
Normally I get rid of it by hitting it, or messing with it until it stops.
Or I just leave it alone until the kink gets out.
It sounds like pure heaven when it's done with it's spasms haha.

nope, i've got gravel.

i guess i'll just take it back some time soon.

it didnt sound that loud mine makes that same sound only my canister filters are really silent HOB all come with some sounds that I found using various brands and models.

Grinding sounds are not normal for any filter. Not a single one of my filters make any noise other than the noise of the water or a slight hum or vibration from the motor. Grinding noises are a result of 2 surfaces coming into contact with each other signifying something is out of alignment.
