Something about this article just makes me :swear:

http://www.slate.com/id/2219276/

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy fishing from time to time. But I'm not going to kid myself that these fish don't feel some sort of pain by it. Just because they can't scream in agony or cry doesn't mean they don't feel pain. Ever seen a fish that was beaten up by another fish cower in the corner? That fish is in pain.

Aarrghh WE KNOW FISH CAN FEEL PAIN WHY CANT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT? :swear:

Most of the fish i catch have some kind of ingury, the bigger ones that is, and im sure they are caused by fishermen, it is a shame but you cant exactly stop people from fishing... fish have nerves, therefore must feel pain by such things

The argument the author makes is that, yes, we have found nerves and pain sensors in fish but they don't have the psychological capacity to understand what pain is.... Which makes so much sense, why would something have pain sensors but not the ability to understand what pain is?

this whole debate comes down to the definition. Those who debate that fish do not feel pain say it is an emotion. In that case it is likely true. fish do not have the ability to feel pain in this way (at least I have not seen any evidence of it). I however have a more basic definition of pain. A simple signal from one part of the organism telling the controll center there is something wrong. in this case they do feel it. So it is not a debate over whether or not the brain can detect the signals, but rather how the signals are interperated by the brain. Not unlike the whole if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it does it make a sound? Define sound? is it the simple vibrations caused by the impact? Or is it the sound receptors in our brains translating it into something we can define?

On an aside, if a man is talking in the woods and his wife is not there to nag him, is he still wrong?

I agree and disagree with this topic

I dont think fish feel pain in the same sense humans do.. which is on an emotional as well as a physical aspect

however.. they can certainly tell when something is "hurting" them and in this case it is still cruel to put an animal through that type of stress reguardless of weather its "pain" in the traditional sense or not

im sure a fish doesnt think in his head "omg he hooked me.. that was really mean.. my mouth hurts" like a human would

but the fishes brain definately tells him that something is not right

I am a fisherman.. and I do it as humanely as possible-- I believe that god put them there for that purpose

but I also know I am causing the fish some level of discomfort, or "pain" weather it be the proper definition or not

I did not read the article.

I am guessing fish feel pain, feel joy and fall in love.

I am guessing also that no matter how you slice it, they would rather be wild and free. If fish could talk they would tell you this.

The keeping of God's creatures for our own personal enjoyment is wrong and unethical.

Thanks for clearing this up. I am joining PETA today!
