So I was at the LFS that I normal don't get to since it's 30 miles the other way from work, so I just don't get down there that often. But they have a better selection and seem to know their stuff. The weird thing is that I noticed they labeled their ram tank with not only German blue ram and Gold German ram but also with Angel German ram. Yesterday when I stopped in, I noticed that they all had very round bodies (like the first time I saw that they carried them), and I figured they must be balloon rams. I could not find a sticker that listed them. I asked one of the people if they had any that weren't balloon rams, and she said, "You mean not angel rams? Not right now. It seems like we run out of the angels and then we get regular ones, and it just cycles."

I wanted regular ones to replace the Gold German that jumped out of my tank (foolish me to rely on floaters!) as I'd heard that balloons are even more finicky than regular rams. Well, after thinking and looking some more, I just had to get them. I told her that I wanted 2 females, and we both looked for them. She actually seemed to know what she was looking for and quickly picked out 2 that she said looked female and a couple she dismissed as male. I was glad since they were only about 1", and it was hard for me to tell (newbie with rams). But, I kept looking at them, and it seemed that both did have the blue speckles where the blackish spot should be (were kinda washed out) and also the first rays of the dorsal spine were only very slightly longer than the rest. Other than that, I'm not sure how to tell. They are both much less investigative than the gold German that I used to have. He (not sure what sex it was but seemed male) cruised about the whole tank from the moment I released him, but these 2 seem much more reserved and I'm not sure that they have moved from behind the driftwood. However, they seemed to take the Cichlid Delite frozen food I fed this morning and seemed to be healthy otherwise. Just shy. Hopefully, they are just getting used to the new home.

Anyway, has anyone else seen "angel rams"?

Try a search on mfk, there's been a bunch of threads about long fin balloon rams there, here are some picses:

check out EBJ german blue rams.. those are pretty

but my alll time favorite FW is the GBR

So, angel rams could be long-fin balloon rams? Mine do have that very round body shape, but I'm not sure that their fins are as long as those in the pics that were posted. I'll have to double check that.
