Amazing Video of Stingray Giving Birth

No Steve's were harmed in the making of this film.

It is interesting to see but she was probably aborting the babies because of the stress. It was likely a last ditch effort to save the next generation.........

It's sad that the mother will likely die due to the trauma.

What I find different about the birth is that they all came out tail first. It's odd because I thought their spine would puncture the mother on the way out but it's obvious that none did.

I think I saw on the Discovery channel somewhere that the barb on the tail doesn't harden until it's out of the mother.

Quick google gave me a site http://www.maxsidorov.com/family/stingrays.html

near the bottom

" The baby rays are born tail first, with their wings rolled up. Their poison spine is rubbery and has a protective covering so that the mother is not stung while giving birth. Within a few days, the ray's spine hardens."

Well that makes sence.

The whole time, I was screaming, "Put them in the water!! Put them back in the water!!!". I don't like fishing for this reason, it looks/is cruel and although he did put them back, it was hard to watch.

yes its intresting to see a member of the shark family give bith too live young, but that was disgusting in the way those fish where treated. and i no ur going to say they have a sting ,but u can also handle these fish without having the barb going into u . and to leave the babies on the decking for such an amount of time OMG

IAM A ANGLER and i can safley say the fish i handle aint harmed hurt or put thro any distress. they are caught unhooked and either returned or placed into a net with wet hands or wet cloth, because if u handle a fish with dry hands its like a hot iron being used
