Am I doing the right thing for ICH?

Wow... I think I spoke too soon earlier...

I just checked and my pleco looks like he has 1 new ICH spot, and I think my 1 cory has 1 new ICH spot on the edge of both of his fins. I could be wrong on the corys, because it looks like the other Cory has white tipped fins and its part of their coloring (peppered corys) but just to be safe I hiked the temp to 88f (has been at 86f since 2-4-10) and siphoned out 3 gallons of water, added 6 teaspoons of salt, and readded it. Aye aye aye!!

As you raise the temp even higher make sure you add extra aeration. If you have a hob you can lower the water level and let the overflow agitate the water.

I had a tough strain of ich recently and took the temp up to 90 degrees. It took several days before the last spot vanished. These were swordtails which can handle the high heat and never showed any sign of stress also took the salinity up to 1.003, more than 1 tsp per gallon. Don't know about corys and plecos. Had to treat a tank with those but didn't have to go over 84 degrees and only 1 tbsp per 5g with the salt.

Good luck. Seems like there are two kinds of tanks, those with ich and those waiting to get ich.

Don't worry... just keep it up... also, make sure their parameters are really good.
If you see any signs of distress at that temp you may want to back off and go back to 86.

Thanks. I have had the level about 3" lower since I started raising the temperature over a week ago. I also have a 3" bubbler buried in the gravel.

Thanks again Mel!! Im just waking up (Happy Valentines Day to everybody, btw!) and am going to test the water here shortly.

Guess it wasnt the right time to start bringing the salinity back down :o :mad2:

Ok so after bringing the tank up to 90f for 3 days, I started lowering it last night and adding salt. I also bought a plastic doo-hicky that measures aquarium salinity at my LFS, but its registering 0 no matter what. Ive added about 25 teaspoons of salt and it still registers 0! But when I mix some salt up with a cup of water and put it into the salinity tester, it measures... I dont know, I read the directions and Im confused as all hell. Any tips?
