So I was wondering if anyone on here owns one or has seen anyone with a above ground pond? I am looking at building one that will be able to hold one of my turtles in it. I was thinking about building it apart of our deck.

I was just curious on what should I build it out of? What padding did you use between the linear and wood? What kind of filteration did you do?

Hi Bonne,
I have an above ground pond made of an 8' round stock tank...I can send you the link to the initial thread if that is what you have in mind. Somewhere on here is a build thread for one made as a big wood box, which might work better for being part of your deck...I think he used a couple layers of moving pads between the rubber liner and the wood...You could probably cut and fit old carpeting pretty easily, too, as a pad between liner and wood.

Here is the link for the thread about the pond built as a big wooden box...

Bonnie, I also have a deck pond. Here are a few pics (hope it works) I used a good quality liner and didn't worry about the liner against the wood. I did use old carpet for the bottom. As for filters, I have two 55 gal barrels(plastic) and have a pump that pushes 2000 gal per hour up hill so I am sure that flow is cut in half. It is a redneck project that will never be done. I'm sure you will get all the info you need on this site.

Hi Bonnie, You can make it out of 2x10's or even 2x6's. Don't worry about the liner against the wood. It won't do a thing, as long as you don't move it around. as far as filtration, go to the local pet store, and they should have a "filter falls" for around $70.00. that would suit you just perfect.

Excellent thread. Hopefully this can generate some good info. I'm also finally designing our above ground/in deck pond for the back yard. Still working on the size and such but some preliminary thoughts that I would like to explore as well would be the possibility of viewing windows in the front. Stictly in the drawing stage at this point. After all...logistics is the most important part.

So for simplistic sake, we'll say the pond height will be ~ 3' from the bottom of the deck and run a gusstimate of 20'. Not sure on window size yet but thinking like two 6' windows might be pretty nice. Feel free to slap me into reality if my thinking is way off.

Sun for this location is morning only as it is in the back of the house. The house will shade it from noon on.

I built this one a couple of years ago for some of my turtles to spend the summer in.
It is about 2' above ground and is dug down about 2' below ground level.

Wow all these above ground ponds are amazing! Gave me alot of ideas on what to do for mine. Question I don't need to build it out of 4x4's? 2x's will work?

I only used 4x4 treated for the posts and put them into 24 inches of concrete, all sideboards are 2x6's. Make sure you use treated lumber for any wood that touches the dirt.
