A good word about Pet Smart

My PetSmart isn't bad as well. Good selection, good prices, good fish. My Petco isn't very good though.

the seems to be the overall consensus. Though i did suck it up and buy 15 rummies from petco. They were .99 and the cheapest aside from that was 2.99. Saved me $30 and only 1 died. They are the most colorful rummies i've seen.

I have found that in the southwestern VA area, Petland seems to have the best selection of healthy fish. I bought ten neon tetras from an LFS in my area (mom and pop), and they all passed within three days. The store gave me a full refund in store credit.

I then proceeded to Petland and the staff was very knowledgeable, and the fish looked amazing. Needless to say, Petland was worth the extra twenty minutes of highway driving. I also picked up a pair of Blue Rams, and they are doing amazing.

Myself, i believe ive seen nice, kept up petsmart's and petco's and i've seen rundown fish tanks in some petsmart's and petco's. In houston area it's both ways. The closest petco in my area has gone down hill quickly recently in the fish department. I was dissapointed in how a fish department can go downhill so quickly; as i just bought fish there weeks ago. The tanks were filled with algae and dead or dying fish.

Lets make sure this doesn't turn intoo any bashing, please. The topic is good box stores. We don't have to deride one to say something good about another.

Thanks.

No, but I think it's interesting and informative to discuss why a chain-store department might go downhill. In my opinion, it all comes down to dedicated staff who are willing to put in extra for what we all know is no extra pay.

If the manager of the fish section of the local PetSmart is working, I'll end up in a conversation. She's very knowledgeable. The quality of stock they get in is not that great though. The mom and pop store across the street usually has healthier stock, but they're very small and usually don't have much of a selection either. It's a toss up in terms of what you're looking for.

True. But any degrading of a store by name will result in the thread being removed. If you want to be specific about a store, it can be sent by PM to the individual or requested from the poster.

Thanks.

The truth is sometimes employees in these departments go through the motions when it comes to work. Some of these people or students with after school jobs may take their job more seriously than others. That being said i would assume or hope most employees injoy what they do and take pride by working well with other employees while keeping up with the fish and tanks. Heck, i've bought most of my fish at petsmart and petco. At a mom and pop store it may be easier to focus on keeping up with their fish and tanks as they usually are smaller, which may make things easier to keep up on. The store owners may not put up with employees not putting max effort in keeping healthy fish. I would hope...
Happy new year to all.....

Van, what part of town are you in? I'm in Cy-Fair area and I was working PT at the PS at Spring-Cypress. I loved it. I had to quit because my hubby can't keep coming home early so I can run off to my fun job and make 7.50 an hour. Anyway, I was in the Fish and small pets dept and all the employees in that area were fairly knowledgeable and everyone cares about the tanks and fish and other animals. I'm sure it helps that the dept. manager LOVES all the fish and pets and is a stickler for policy and procedures. They take very good care of all the livestock. So anyway, I can vouch for that location. When I want more variety though, I drive down to T&T Fish & Reptile off hwy 6. They are locally owned and are really good and knowledgeable and have a wide variety of hard to find species and BIG fish, if you want them. VERY nice SW stuff too.

Next I'm going to go check out Village Tropical Fish. I've read good things about them. It's a drive for me, and I'm sure they're expensive, but the store sounds really cool to visit, if only to check out their aquascaping.

Fish shopping/browsing is my 2nd favorite thing to do!

I've found one good large pet shop which has a good fish section. Super Pet, I don't know if you have them, I'm in Canada. The one I found here in Mississauga is very good. The fish are treated for parasites before they're sold and the staff I've dealt with is knowledgable and honest.
