So, it has just entered the realm of possability that I'll be getting a 75 gallon tank instead of a 55 gallon tank. WOOT WOOT! Sorry, I'm just excited, because a 75 is larger then I had ever dreamed of being able to get for my moms place. It's the same length as a 55, so it is acceptable. So now, on the the expensive part where I get lights and equipment for the tank. I have all year to set it up, so I can save my $$$ for decent equipment.

The budget on this tank is limited. I will spend what I can (between $250 and 350) and then my parents are pitching in (18th birthday, they wanted to do something nice for me) so the budget gets a little bigger.

Here is what I planned for equipment: 2X48in T5HO CoralLife Lighting. 2XEheim 2217 Canister Filter and 1XMarineland Penguin 350 HOB Filter. 2in Sand. Some large rocks. A heater or 3 (what heater would be best for a 75 gal tank?). No CO2 System unless I suddenly become wealthy :). Would I need powerheads(?), I've never had a tank this large before (my 40 breeder has plenty of flow from the... 5 HOBs on it).

The Stocking I hope to have in the tank is as follows:

  • 1X Pearl Gouramis
  • 1X German Blue Ram
  • 1X Bolivian Ram
  • 3X Female Mollies
  • 6X Porthole Catfish
  • 6X Praecox Rainbowfish
  • 6X Red Irian Rainbowfish
  • 9X Assorted Corys
  • 9X Assorted Hatchets
  • 9X Serpae Tetra
  • 24X Neon Tetra
  • 1X Thomasi Plecostomus
  • 1X Mystery Snail/Brigg (whenever I have more they die until one is left :()
Anything wrong with that stocking? Too much, incompatable, ext?

Plant wise I hope to have some swords, some java moss, some of the random plant that I have never named, Hornwort, and anything else that can live under 4 T5HO bulbs.

Decor wise... well now, that's the main problem (as if money didn't count). I have a peice of Driftwood that would fit into the tank rather well, but it needs to soak (it's too long for any of my current tanks or totes!) and then I have a decent amount of other driftwood. But even all of it combined will only equal about 1/5th the tank. I have some smaller stones I've found and collected, but again, nothing major. I have fake plants, but not enough. So you can see my delema. A 48X19X22in tank doesn't just fill itself out lol. So we'll see what I pull out of my hat this time around.

Sadly, the tank isn't even confirmed yet, but I always try to work ahead of myself. So, if anyone has suggestions for the tank, or comments on the stocking, feel free to do so. If you can asnwer the questions (bolded) that would be cool as well!

stock sounds good, but 2 diff. species of rams might cause some fights. nothin too bad, though.

im gonna be getting a 90 gal soon! hooray for big tanks! woot!

get some p. denisonii :)

I don't have any experience with larger tanks, but I'd skip the java moss if possible. Mine always ends up in my intake tubes, and can be a real PITA.

Get vals. They grow pretty fast.
Stocking sounds okay but why the 1 German ram, 1 bolivian, and 3 mollies?

Okay, so my mom nixed it saying that she didn't want to spend "that kind of money" ($100) on a fish tank... However, thats not going to stop me, just slow me down a little. I can afford one part of this set up every 2 weeks. I'll start with the tank and stand, then move on to the filters, then the lighting. That should take me aprox 2 months (so the tank's last final touches will be added in november). I'll use Christmass as my excuse to buy myself the stock.

wow i might be getting a 75 gallon too!!

Good luck, they cost money...

The Bolivian and the German Blue get along fine, they've been together for a while now.

I'd say yes, but I don't have a tight fitting lid yet. I'll make that a priority before stocking :)

It does, I know. However, if netted down using fishing line, it can be an amazing addition to any tank.

Because the core stocking for this tank is from my 40 breeder, and those are 5 fish I will never get rid of. They are get allong fine with the fish in the 40 (serpae, neon, cory)

That's a pretty large fish load there...over 70 individual fish.

welll... it WILL have 2 Eheim 2217's... shouldn't that be plenty of filtration? Or are you talking space wise? If needed I can lower the stocking levels.
