55gallon setup at Walmart??

I just picked up that setup last month minus the stand. I paid $140 and didn't use the filter or heater and upgraded. The tank is fine and is an All glass. The stand they sell looks kind of weak though.

While my tank and stand are not from Wal-mart, most of the equipment on my 55g is (my hobs, ugf, heater, etc.). Now, I may be wrong on this one, but I heard once that the aqua-tech filters from Wal-Mart are manufactured by Marineland (who makes penguin). That being said, I'm not crazy about my filters simply because it's hard to put different media in them, but they are fairly old and still work fine. I also have the aqua-tech powerheads on my UGF and they work great. So all in all, I would buy a kit from Wal-Mart.
You are correct. The AquaTech filters at Wal-Mart are made by Marineland. In fact, they are the same as an old-style Penguin. So if you want to add Bio-Wheels, all you have to do it buy the bio-wheels and the bearings they run on, snap them in, and you have a fully-fledged Penguin Bio-Wheel filter.

to summerize. The only problem is that the price , to us that live in suberbia USA, seems kinda steep. On the other hand, you are giving yourself time. So, keep looking, and if they don't go on sale or you don't luck in to a good deal on used before you need it, go for it. Meanwhile, scout out ebay for tanks in your area, complete setups often go reasonable. One thing. I would get ( or make) the wood stand, they're sturdier and give you place to hide supplies.

i bought my tank from petco for 199 but i want to buy a wood stand for it from walmart....will it hold up?

I have the walmart 55 kit and stand. The tank has been great so far, the heater is adequate in my house (~64-75*F), and the heater can be hidden in the stock filter if you notch out a bit of the cover for the cable to pass through. The stand is made out of common paperboard and cam/bolt joints like most cheap furniture, but seems sturdy enough. If you have the tools and inclination you could probably build a nicer stand for cheaper, but this one is decent.

You get great deals in newspapers or ebay(no taxes).People get out of the hobby all the time. Many times because they never educated themselves on how to keep the fish alive.

That is how I got my tank... 55 G, Fluval 305 filter, 300 watt heater, custom built stand, décor, Python, and all the random things I wanted... it also came with this huge castle that sells for like 90 bucks and I am going to sell it to make some money... the tank and everything was 200… the person bought everything top of the line then did not have time to tank care of her fish.

I also bought my 55 gal. at Walmart. It was only $150.00 and if works great. The only problem I have run into is one of the hood lights not working. It's not the light bulb either, we have tried to change it and it doesn't seem to help. Anyone else have this problem with theirs? Good luck!
