150 gal. tank...?

Just got offered a nice 150 gal tank for $100. It was used as a snake tank. It has been cleaned by the owner. What would I need to clean it again with to make sure my Goldfish don't die off in it? Can I scrub it with bleach and soap and rinse the snots out of it or bad idea?:confused:
 
I would just clean it well with vinegar and water. You could use a bleach and water solution if you were really worried, just rinse well and I would add dechlor as well after filling just as a safeguard.
 
Do not use soap. I second the vinegar. Also ammonia works well but please don’t mix with bleach EVER! unless you want a trip to the hospital.

Also I would make super sure it holds water and the seams are all in good shape.
 
A double handful of salt mixed with a bit of water to make a paste. Smear it around on all surfaces and let it remain for 15 mins or so and then rinse. It's nice because it acts as amild abrasive that won't scratch the tank and will also sterilize without risk if you miss a bit when rinsing the tank.
 
the deal got better,got the tank for $75, i'm feeling better already. I think I'll try the salt thing and rinse with the vinegar/water mix...thanks for the replies.

Agree, you want to make sure your not buying a thin glassed reptile only tank. Unless of course you are just using it for reptiles and a few inches of water. Otherwise you could end up with a scene strait out of Mission Impossible 1 without the gum.

Otherwise congrats on a fabulous steal deal
 
agreed, since the last owner used this as a reptile enclosure, you need to make certain that this is an aquarium tank, not a reptile tank. The difference is in the width pof the glass. A reptile could work for a short while I guess, but it's not something I would risk and dive in not know if it was either or.
