Hey all so I have had my 12g fluval edge since February now and I thought I would share about the tank since some people ( I know I was) are hesitant to consider them since they are a designer tank. When I bought the tank it came w/ vals, wisteria, a couple of really nice anubias and some other plant (not much of a plant expert). I wasnt sure that the lights provided with the set up (L.E.D's) would be enough to sustain these plants even though they are lower light plants, but I was wrong!
1) Lights: 42 LEDs with white and blue, very bright with a nice water resistant covering to them: The plants are not just growing much larger but they are spreading. The Anubias has a distinct second plant and there is another 2 leaf one in the middle of the tank somehow. The vals I may have accidentally killed by leaving out of water totally for roughly 24 hrs and I planted them in large bundles since I had so many... Many of those died off but I have a nice portion left and growing strong still. The wisteria (is what I was told it was) is doing just the same, growing very slowly. The light was one of my bigger concerns since I had all these really nice looking plants and I wanted them to thrive and they certainly have!
Now I must say this about the light tho, it is very powerful and has no problem hitting the bottom and growing plants but it misses some portions of the tank. Now this isnt a problem for plants since it misses the top corners of the tank (roughly 1-2 inchs from the top is dark). You cant notice during the day time but at night you can see it. Its actually kind of cool to see but I guess some really tall plants might have a problem at the top?
Also it DOES grow algae, on the back and front walls mostly. Though it doesnt bother me since my tank came with a few pond snails in the plants which turned into 50+ and are happily taking care of all that lol
2) The filter: the fluval edge filter is much more powerful than I expected it to be, its intake collects all debris I stir up in the tank cleaning or planting etc and the water flow coming out certainly shows it, the flow almost reaches the bottom of the tank with bubbles and when my small neons swim through it it pushes them pretty fast in its current. Now the other part, some fish done like such a strong current, but what is nice most of the tank is relatively still while a small section of it (middle front area) has a strong current from the filter. In addition to the filter strength I was impressed with the filter media that came with it since I have never used any fluval equipment before (run 2x marineland emperor 300's on my 75 gal).
3) Heater: just running a fluval heater, non adjustable set to 79 heater that came with my setup (doesn't normally). No complaints it doesn't make a sound and it feels like its built very well and the tank is always right at 79.
4) Tank itself: the dimensions of the tank taller than a 10 gal ( this is a 12g tank) but it is more narrow. The appeal of it sitting on its little base with all of its cords and its opening covered is really nice as well. The ONLY complaint I have about this tanks design is the opening is rather small... I use 5 gal buckets to do my wcs and it is a little difficutl to not spill out of the hole but all in all very worth the hassle on that part IMO. When I get a python that will no longer even be an issue. The glass however is very clear and the seams where the glass comes together is very small which I love since its such a sleek looking tank you dont have big ugly silicone seams all around it. (obviously there is some silicone but it is done very cleanly and nicely)
Overall in my opinion I give the tank a 9.5/10. Everything is really well done about this tank, it looks nice, functions well, and makes a nice little tank. Only downfall is having to work in that hole on the top during maintenance.
