My wife&I were looking at different coral peices at the LFS today and the selection wasn't real impressive, I saw even a few that were just plain ugly and I'm like "WHO would put that nasty thing in their tank?" Also discovered the nudubranch...wow that's an ugly beast...i had never seen one before. And..they had an angler. I think it would be interesting to set up an "ugly tank" one day lol.

So the question I have is...what is the ugliest coral/invert/sea creature you've run into?

I think anglers, frogfish, scorpionfish are some of the ugliest fish in captivity some of deep sea fishes are much uglier though. ugly invert's I'd go with various worms you find as hitchhikers, coral's I've seen a few ugly looking mushrooms, certain dull solid colored polyp's(brown is a good example) not so much ugly as not appealing.

Nudibranches...ugly? They basically prove the saltwater rule, the more interesting and colorful the creature the less likely it'll survive long-term in a standard reef tank.

It's all opinion when it comes to this stuff though. I personally find the whole Angler/Frog/Toad/Scorpion/etc. group to be rather interesting, in their own way. I find SPS rather boring, but then the high-end reef-keepers spend fortunes to collect and keep. I could see Sea Hares and Cucumbers being considered quite ugly, but they have their own form of beauty really.

About the only corals I'd say I find a bit ugly are some of the more commonly kept Gorgonians (NPS varieties are quite nice though...thus proving the above saltwater rule... :irked:). Inverts, I'd say Decorator Crabs. Creepy, evil creatures too.

Cabbage leather!

Even the more common lettuce and berghia nudis are incredible

In all fairness there are hundred/thousands of nudis so I guess there may be some "not so pretty ones" :).

A tank full of bristleworms/fireworms would do the trick.

You just made me think of something I've also been wanting to ask for a while...dea sea fish--can they be kept? if you wanted to keep a vampire squid or gigancticis fish in your (very expensive dream) tank, are there special gravity equipment or....hmmm wow...is it possible to KEEP DEEP SEA FISH??? I have never seen one at an aquarium....

The ones that you only see deep down can't survive the low pressure in a normal tank, but its possible to build something to house them. http://reefbuilders.com/2012/06/20/abyssbox-oceanopolis/
