So, I know this sounds far fetched, but in discussions with a friend on another forum, I was told that NYC does not chlorinate it's tap water. The reasoning behind believing this, according to this person, was that both our tanks continually became re-infected with flukes despite prazi treatments and no new additions. Params are absolutely fine, as I don't usually let my nitrates get over 10ppm, and there are 3 fish in a 75. She conjectured that since there appeared to be living parasites coming into our tanks through the tap, that our water was likely not treated. What do y'all think about that?

it has to be chlorinated if it is municipal (city) water.

the only water that you drink that is not chlorinated would be certain well waters/spring water.

if it comes from the treatment plant, its chlorinated.

simply because the other methods of water disinfection (UV, ozone etc) do not provide any disinfection from the time the water leaves the treatment plant until it comes out of your tap.

so yes, if NYC water comes to your home via a treatment plant, it is most certainly chlorinated.

im from nyc and the water is definetly chlorinated. i once didnt add stress coat right away after a water change and lost half the fish in my tank. the other half were belly up but breathing and as soon as i added dechlorinater they came back to life. ny has a reputation for having the cleanest water in the country. they treat and monitor it more thoroughly. your disease recurrence is most likely a very resistant parasite.

I think i've got it licked, as there hasn't been a problem since the weather warmed up, but I was wondering mainly because I'm out of dechlor and wanted to change the water in my vaillanti tank. Was hoping I could get by without it, but it's better to wait.

i actually tested my water for chlorine. just a friendly warning that brooklyn does have unsafe levels of chlorine in the tap water. if you need to do a water change i would say 10-15 max without dechlorinater.

Ouch... I ran out of dechlor halfway through my unintended 90% on the 75. Everyone is still lookin OK though.

I've got great vision.

lol. i did a friends water change in long island. it was 60% but he claimed to have a water filter built into the plumbing of the house... he is an idiot with an active imagination. all his fish died within minutes of filling up the tank. maybe you got lucky. i know long island has higher levels of chlorine. in fact, when i did 25% changes for my cichlid 75 gallon tank, i never used dechlorinator and never had a problem (this is in brooklyn). best to play it safe.

I live in Nyc and I believe the water is chlorinated. I add my dechlorinator to my tap water before adding it to the tank been doing this since I started the hobby with no problems. Better to be safe then sorry.
