Hi Friends !

Is it advicable and ok to keep a few Upside Down Catfishes in a Community setup, i.e with smaller fishes like Cardinal tetras, Corys, Clown Plecos, Shrimps etc ?

Kindly advice.
Thanks and Regards

if they are the true upside-downs you queried earlier (Synodontis nigriventris) then they should be okay with even the small fish as they really don't get that big and aren't predatory or agressive; I'm not sure about the shrimps though- depending on their size these might be considered food by them. If it's one of the other species then I personally wouldn't risk it.

There are a few species of up-side down cats. Some grow to just 3" and some to over 6". Which one are we talking about??

Carp37,
Do you know of a good source for Callichthys callichthys? And, due to all of the changes I have noticed on the naming of this particular species, could you possibly provide a picture of your's so that we can be sure that we are referring to the same fish - or maybe a website with pictures? I have been looking for some time with no success. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Also, you have me wondering whether my nigriventris are actually named properly as they are already 6 to 7 inches long and only just over a year old. At this point I would be worried about cardinals in with them when the lights are out as well as the shrimp. ???

Yes, I believe those are what I am looking for. I remember the brown color in mine having a bit more orange in it but the body shape, scale pattern and finnage are what I remember.

Mine are still young- they were about 4" long when that photo was taken (the male's in front of one of the females) and are now about 5"; the females are much paler (and fatter) than the male. In that tank they used to come and sit on my hand to eat bloodworm. They're like the hoplos' evil twins- totally non-aggressive but really boisterous at feeding time, and with a face like predator....

Interesting....these look not at all like the one's I have had (Synodontis nigriventris). Mine were short pudgy guys with big bulging eyes. Cute as can be if I must say. Never had any issues with keeping them in tanks with shrimps (ghost), plecos, and other small fish like neons and the such. I had to google to get a pic...but these are the ones I have kept.
