Pregnant Platy?

Hey everyone,

I've noticed recently that one of my platys has gotten a bigger belly and she has been flaring her fins at all the other fish and acting really agressive...

do you think she could be pregnant?? how do i tell...i've looked it up on the net but theres nothing helpful coz they say to look at the colour of her belly and shes black so theres no difference...


does anyone have any info about pregnant platys and even when they will give birth and so on

if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated... so i can get her out of the communal tank if she is pregnant

The only thing I can tell you is that the gestational period is about 30 days. Anthing else I am curious about myself. I wish I had more to tell you.
 
here is the deal... If you have a male and a female platy together, the female IS pregnant. The question is just when she will have babies. The bigger she is the sooner it will happen.

watch out, the platies are very likely to eat the babies.
 
aaaah lol she better not have that many babies...i dont have room for them lol...

and yeh i do have a male and a female coz i made the guy at the fish shop pick me a guy and a girl...ive had them for a while now tho...

so i guess i should go out and buy maybe a breeding box?? or whatever they're called

do they often get aggressive when theyre pregnant??

It addresses most of your questions. I prefer providing lots of cover vs using a net breeder or breeding trp; less hassle for me and the moms seem less stressed.

First broods are more likely to be 6-10 in my experience, maybe less. Never seen more than about 15 at a time, but some could have been eaten or stillborn.

You have a BLACK platy? Would love to see pics of it....
 
Thanks! I definitely have a pair.

I think they are still too young to breed.

The only experience I have with live bearers are mollys and swordtails, but I definitely remember a lot of funny looking poo before they gave birth. That should be your warning to start watching.
