I have a 40 gallon aquarium with guppies, Zebra Danios, Serpae Tetra and Black Skirt Tetra I just purchased a 45 gallon tank. So far, I am undecided what kind of fish to buy. What would you recommend? Should I buy cichlids or tropical fish and what should I buy? I know it is a personal choice but I torn between the two. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Gracias.

Can't go wrong with more tropical fish either or make it a coldwater river setup with white cloud mountain minnows and hillstream loaches of various species.

This post is confusing because cichlids are tropical fish so it makes no sense.
It's like asking should I get cold water fish or goldfish?...I don't mean to mock you and hope I don't come across that way.

Why not a little of both? Community tank with Angels or Rams... There are other possible Cichlids that may do ok too. I'm just not real up to speed on them, but when I was (and still am) debating this very thing I started researching Kehole Cichlids (denzonni) and I think some community fish would be ok with them as long as you're careful.

I'm sure that by "tropical fish" piscadero means....community fish...correct?

Keyhole Cichlids are a great community fish. IMO. Yes they will eat smaller forms of tetras, but only as long as they can fit in their mouth. ;) Other than that, they aren't very aggressive.

In my 75gal mudskipper/community tank, I have two male keyholes, with tetras, corys, plecos, ect.... everyone dose just fine. Yes the keyholes did eat off some of the tetras, but now the tetras are too big to fit in their mouth. ;) lol.

are you referring to Cleithracara maronii(Keyhole cichlid)?

they are a very peaceful cichlid and do well in most community tanks. they also are not large. they are not a true dwarf and may reach 4" mine have hit a solid( robust) 3"

I call them the Teddy bear cichlid....lol

Dat's them! Not sure why denzonii popped into my head. Please note my disclaimer... "I'm just not real up to speed on them". lol

Once I can find a stand for my new 55 (Have everything else minus substrate), I'd like to try them out. What do you think about them with Rainbows?
