Gotcha, it can be tricky to get your head around. That's why units like molarity and the metric system are so powerful. They allow you to think of things in scales of hundreds, not billions or worse.

I know it's been like, forever and a day since this was last commented on, but I just wanted to say that after taking the time to read each and every last word, I appreciate your willingness to share with others the knowledge that you have obviously worked so hard to obtain.
I'm going to bookmark this and re-read it. And then read it again.
How did I stumble upon a two plus year old topic? I'm struggling with tap water that has no buffering abilities, and thus a fluctuating PH. And then started looking at ways to help keep my nitrites & nitrates in check while I figure out the best way to buffer my water.
