The API liquid ammonia test is notorious for false positives btw. Anything 0.25 and under is often false. Sometimes it's actually reading chloramine in our tap water instead.

A steady pH is more important than anything, so don't advise chasing a number. Learn your GH and KH too, these play a role--some fish are more stringent than others with GH, and KH affects your pH (low KH can cause a pH to swing wildly) so these are very handy to know as well.

Best thing is to choose fish with needs within our own parameters, instead of recklessly chasing numbers :)

Looking into good info for parameters and social needs, search the species on seriously fish, Sometimes you need to Google search "*fish name here* seriously fish" to locate the species if its not popping up in the site's search bar, but its a handy tool.

Fishbase is another good source for some information too. Avoid blog type resources as they tend to run more on biased opinion vs scientific fact. And careful with pet shop workers too, they don't always know, or worse just want a sale and you can't always tell.
