If your home temps are maintained in the 70s℉; then, yes...you can do without a heater. I went years without one. Granted, i kept my thermostat set at around 75℉ at the time. I do think that the normal household temps of 68℉-72℉ are a little low for the long term keep of many tropical fish. They certainly wouldnt be very active. ;-)

There's plenty of tropical fish that will do well in a typical ~68-72F room temperature. If your tank is in a room where the temperature doesn't swing more than a few degrees plus or minus, and is in a range suitable for the fish you keep, there's nothing more stable than going heater-less.

Ever see a Betta kept at room temperature? They are generally lethargic and many times stop eating. German blue rams probably wouldn't last very long Discus too for that matter. It depends a great deal on which types of fish you are keeping.
