Sociability: This fish is compatable with most species minus Oscars. Oscars see the Ghost knife as an expensive snack. Other cichlids use caution. this fish is nocturnal and would prefer low light situations.Ghost knives are mostly blind and planted tanks are handled well. no more then 2 knives should ever be kept in the aquarium because of sensory Scrambling. Ghost knives use a very weak EM or Electromagnetic Sonar to find their way to prey and to their hiding places. Fish that are smaller then their mouths would most likely be eaten. Neon tetra and small species inclufing ADF and ACF's should be avoided. Fin nipping species Ie Tiger barbs and some gourami should also be avoided as they would find the undulating fin too tempting. Ghost knives can tolerate a range of temps from 72~85. Soft bottom substrate is a must as they are somewhat of a delicate fish. Sand is the best but rounded gravel will work. Also provide some vegitation in the tank, some knives like to "graze" on plants from time to time and should be offered live plants indigenous to their home habitat Ie, Northern, South America in the Amazon river basin. These fish Also Love current so a powerhead is almost a requirement. some species may spend hours just swimming against the current. An aquarium over 180 gallons is required to house a Ghost knife in the long term. It's footprint should not be less then 36"wide 60" Tall. this species can grow over 3 feet in length (36 inches) since Ghost knives are an elongated, laterally compressed fish care should be taken to make sure the ghost can get out of any nook and cranny in the tank IE behind intakes heaters Rocks, driftwood etc.
Diet: Ghost knives are Carnivorus, beefheart, liver, bloodworms, mealworms, earthworms readily accepted. with Experience and a trusting Species the Black Ghost knife can learn to eat from your hands.*
pH: ghost knives can handle 6.0 to 8.2 with 6.5~7.0 being Ideal.
