Homosexual Platy or Male Dominance?

So I added a new male sword tail and 2 females to my tank today. I have a 29 Gallon with live breaders (3 Mollies, 3 Platies, and a Silver Tip Catfish) For some reason my male platy has been very umm "RANDY". So I put the new fish in and the male platy starts trying to "spawn" with the male sword tail. He keep chasing the new guy around and wiggiling his parts at him and trying to stick him. I'm very new to the mating of fish and am so lost!

So my question is do fish know the difference between male and female? Or could this just be him trying to show his dominance in the tank?(which he's never done with any of the other males in my tank)

(please forgive me for posting this lame thread)

Im fairly sure thats just a dominance issue. As far as i know whales and humans are the only animals that can be homosexual (maybe dolphins, i really dont know). I kept two male anoles in a tank and there was the same issue (one male was considerably larger)

chunksofpooh, why would you think only whales and humans can be homosexual?

i would say that's probably male dominance, though. If the fish was homosexual he'd probably want his own specie at least, wouldnt he? i'd have to see it to know exactly what's going on.
fish definitely know the difference between male and female (otherwise it would be difficult for them to breed in the wild.) some fish also kill other males of their species such as bettas, but they know exactly what to do if they encounter a female! (of course female bettas look different, but that's only one example.)

its not that i think those are the only animals that can be, its just that they're the only documented animals that show homosexual tendencies (thank you discovery channel).

Acually, monkyes, apes, orangitans, gorillas all show homosexual interests.

yah, i forgot to include those as well

So yeah I think you guys were totally right. The Platy has calmed down and is no longer chasing my sword tail. Everyone is happy and comfortable! :D

Ive heard that when there is no male in the tank that the 2 female of a species sometimes still get it on and even spawn eggs but they are infertile though, and they always have to end up adopting... :thud: :thud:
