hi everyone.
i've had a 10-gallon freshwater tank up and running for several months now. i kept the same tank off and on for years when i was growing up.
anyway, i have a zebra danio who has developed a rather nasty inflammation at the base of his tail. it is as if his whole body there is extremely swollen. it is red and seems to "leak" little white pus or something now and then. the rest of his body looks perfectly normal, it is only this giant swelling, which is symmetrical, almost spherical.
it started out several weeks ago. it was a small swelling at first, but it slowly grew. then it seemed to stabilize, and since the fish did not seem to be in any distress (swims normally, eats normally, breathes normally) i figured it might just go away. but it has not, and it seems to be growing again.
the fish is maybe 1 1/2 inches long, and if his body is normally 1/8 inch thick where it meets his tail, then with the swelling is maybe 1/4 inch or more. and very red. with little white bits sticking out sometimes, almost like it's leaking.
i recently treated the tank for ick and fin rot with malachite green, acriflavine hydrochloride, and formalin. could this be related?
i've searched and searched for this in various fish disease books, and the only thing that comes close is a tumor. his scales are not flared out or anything.
i keep the water at about 78-80 F, and i change about 25% of the water every month or two. i feed once a day with either flakes or pellets, and every now and then drop an algae tablet for the bottom-feeders.
there are two other zebra danios in the tank, neither of which seem to be having any trouble. (one of them seems to have something on his fins, but nothing like the giant swollen inflammation.)
i've been trying to take a picture of it, but he moves too quick so they all come out too blurry.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
