Looks like one of my neons may be pregnant. I know how hard it is and how inexpensive they are to buy, but I do want to add more to my school of 6...

I have all the equipment needed, 10g tank, sponge filter. etc.

Think it is worth the trouble attempting to get them to successfully breed?

The odds are against success...

any idea how long I have to act until the female lays the eggs? I have to convince the GF to "allow" another tank in the apartment.

Let that #$()* know that you are the man of the house, and as the man you'll do what you please and own as many aquariums as you want. And then after she finishes beating you to within an inch of your life and kicks you out, you can find a place of your own where you can have as many tanks as you want! Win-Win!

Hi
Have raised both cardinal and neon tetras. The tough part is actually raising them to adults. While a ten is adequet for spawning need a lot more room for growing. I found the roe very susceptuble to fungus requiring very low carboate hardness also lots of live food to condition the adult prior to spawning. Certainly one of the tougher species to spawn and rear but it can be done. Is it worthwhile??? That's up to you.lol

Neons do not get pregnant. They do not mate and lay fertilised eggs afterwards like birds or reptiles; the males fertilise the eggs as they are laid. Your female is not pregnant although she may be swollen with eggs; this does not mean she's necessary going to lay them, and she in all likelihood won't, unless you set up the right sort of environment with some lively male fish. This is a fairly basic point about the process, so I would suggest you do a lot of reading first. If your water is not very soft it's probably not worth the effort.

For one's personal satisfaction of accomplishing such, Why not? For $, not worth the efforts, imo.

As long as tank water isnt extreme, can be done. All you gotta do is apply some stimuli such as adding black water extracts (change in water chemistry), drop/change of water temp, increased water level/pressure, etc, etc. at appropriate time.

No lighting needed. Just let sunlight do the illumination.

Have fun!!

Depends on what worth it means to you. From a monetary standpoint no way, the fish are too cheap and readily available. From a standpoint of personal achievement definitely, it a real feat to spawn and raise either, particularly Cardinals. One tip if you try, Neon eggs are sensitive to light, so spawn them in a dimly lit tank and then darken it with some methylene blue immediately after pulling the adults.

Just follow direction on MB as overdose/use to darken the tank MAY have negative impacts on the eggs.
Utilize natural methods as Ive done to darken and minimize fungal growth on the eggs as well . Such topics have been discussed in few threads recently and all one gotta do is know when/how to apply such facts/info to serve its/their purposes..

Never had issues with hatching by utilizing sunlight coming into room as no one should let direct sunlight hit the tank anyway unless has specific purposes. Even done it with 15W Incand Aqua Lux on breeding tanks but no need.
One thing I always did though on such breeding tanks was to paint dark colors or had heavy/thick growth of algae on the back/sides in order to minimize sudden movements/shadows brought on by unauthorized personnel..

Also have a 20g tall laying around. Perfect.

I have done about 2.5 hours reading up on this already, just used the term "pregnant" for ease of describing it. Thanks though.

My water is slightly hard, which is holding back my decision. I think when I tested it a while back it read at 7 or 8 GH... I am cool with spray painting 3 sides of the tank black, and using all the trick I have read. I probably wouldn't use MB though, as my 2 cats are always getting into things...

We will see what happens, if I do anything it will be today.
