Will a rubber band work to tie java fern to driftwood? I know fishing line or zip ties would work better. I'm just curious because I've already put them in there and I'm wondering what to expect.

They will last for a short time, but will break in time. The rubber that is used breaks down in water over time. In my experience.

yup, they last a month or so then deteriorate. Usually by then the java fern is anchored, but pulling off the broken rubberband can be a pita. I prefer sewing thread.

Yeah, Ive used robber bands before but they break evnetually. I use cotton string because it just rots away after a while, and with my sausage fingers I find it a lot easier to tie than sewing thread. :D

I steal my daughter's hair elastics for mine. They look like dental retainer elastics but are made out of latex or something similar. They last longer than normal rubber elastics and come in a variety of tasteful colours!

I use rubber bands to keep my cucumbers and other vegetables at the bottom of my tank on a small piece of granite. The bands last about a month before they get really brittle.

best band i have used to attach plants to rock or wood is those black plastic-coated wires that come with like everything electrocnic nowadays. they're cheap, eays to remove, easy to adjust, and aesthetically pleasing.
