A friend of a friend just recently purchased 2 goldfish in a 1 gallon tank. My friend said, "Which is good because...they won't outgrow their tank.". I'm coming down with a cold right now, so despite searching the forums, I can't come up with any answer to that. Can someone please tell or direct me to why that's not true? I'm so sorry to ask, but I can't even come up with search terms right now. :o Thanks so much!

Probably because they are POOP MACHINES!! Goldfish seem to produce same amount of poop as a fish 3x their size/volume.

1 gallon is also not good since the average goldfish gets to be AT LEAST 8" long. They do produce growth inhibiting hormones in their waste, but that will end up stunting them, which isn't a nice thing.

They can technically live in a 1 gallon tank, and they will not grow any bigger.

Sounds all cherry doesnt it?

Except of course, that the reason they wont grow any larger is because they become stunted, and it will lead to a greatly reduced lifespan.

With frequent water changes you can lessen the stunting, but honestly, youd need to be doing 100% water changes 3 times a day in a 1 gallon tank.

I have a page on goldfish bowls and why they are a bad idea for goldfish (and any other fish). It is a small page, but has some good info. It is definitely good for a beginner or someone not into reading loads of information. If you'd like, check it out at:

they'll only live in that 1 gallon tank for less than a year probably.

depending on what kind of goldfish they can grow to over a foot long, and that's not even mentioning how much waste they produce.

why not try to convince him/her to get a single male betta for that tank? prettier than goldfish, and more personality too :)

Thank you everyone! I wouldn't even put a male betta in a 1 gallon tank. Two or more gallons, maybe. Thanks again!!

Personally, I wouldn't put a betta in that either. However, that is the only thing I would ever recommend if I had to. It's better than someone going on and buying a school of danios or something. (Yikes!).

Now THAT is all matter of opinion. ;)

ok, ok fair enough. ;) i didnt mean to offend the goldfish lovers out there.

and im really no fan of keeping bettas in anything less than a 2.5, ive made that clear in other threads :)

im just saying, if you have to keep a fish in one gallon space, then youre better off with a betta than two goldfish.
