Hello fellow pisciphiles (hope that's a real word)! Hope someone can help. I'm interested in upgrading the filter that came with 'the set' of my 20 gallon long tank. This one is a Penn-Plax bio-falls 100, and I think I'd like one with a little more 'oomph' and was wondering which was the best (most efficient) type? Are the Bio-wheel types better? I'm not expert enough to want one of the canister sooper-dooper (really expensive) ones - I've only had my aquarium going on two years now - but I'd like a more efficient filter. When I DO install the new filter, I plan on letting the original one run while the new one works through the 'cycle', so I don't lose all those nice nitrobacters. Is this a good plan? Any help would be VASTLY appreciated.

Thanks and happy fish watching!

do you mean the best hang on back (hob) filter? that is a matter of preference. I have both penguins (with the biowheel) and aquaclear (with the media basket). I prefer the aqua clear because it has more versatility of media, i don't have to buy silly cartridges or figure out alternatives to silly cartridges, it has adjustable flow, and its pretty quiet. The penquin works just fine as long as the water level is all the way up, if it creeps down the biowheel tends to slow and occasionally stop. I think you can get just as good biological filtration in the ac by using a sponge, ceramic rings, etc. as far as canisters, rena xp line is pretty darn affordable, quiet, and, from my experience, reliable. hope that helps!

For "in-tank", my 1st choice would be a decent sized sponge filter w/ PH or airstone (5g or less only). 2d choice would be a Whisper i series, w/ media bag. The bags are refillable, the floss is pretty tough & they're very quiet. They're also cheap, so if it dies, you aren't out much $.

I haven't tried other internal filters except for the old box type, which I find to be pretty crappy.
