Any wood really. Depends on the design of the stand. There's a guy on here that made a stand completely out of MDF. Nothing wrong with that either, but he's a carpenter by trade .

Most people make stands out of 2x lumber as a frame and then wrap the frame in oak faced plywood for appearance.

Just depends on what look you are going for. Building with 2x4's is overkill for most average tank sizes (I'm also a woodworker), but for ease of assembly and cost you can't beat it for those who don't have a wood shop. :)

Depends on what you are looking for.

If you just want a sturdy frame, but don't care how it looks, you could just use pine. Pine is less costly than most other woods, and is what most 2x4s are made from (that you can readily buy at the local hardware superstore).

If you care a little bit about looks, then you can still build the frame from pine, but then use another wood that has a better appearance (such as oak, cherry, etc).

If you want to build a family heirloom, then you can probably build the whole thing from wood with a better appearance (such as oak, cherry, etc), but it will cost you an arm and a leg.

Hope that helps.

For finish wood or frame-wood?

Finish, Oak, pine, spruce, andy wood that looks nice wil work.

For frame, any 2/4/6 x 4 will work. 4x4's are only neccisary on 125g tanks and larger. But larger is safer.

Sir

Please, can I have some more?

are you going to use a finish on the wood or paint over it when you are done?

well i was going to paint it black and then give it a shiny finish. but depending on what kind of tank i get, i might just give it an oak finish because most of the stuff in our house is either black, white, or redish oak.

If you follow the link in my sig and go the DIY section there is an article on building stands. There is also one on building one out of MDF (yeah...I am that guy). Stands can be made out of almost any material if built properly. You don't need to spend a bundle to make a nice stand. Patience and accuracy is what makes a nice stand.
