im looking at getting a gold severum. id only want him and either one other cichlid or some dithers. so what size tank would i need? if i got dithers what would be some good ones? if i got one other cichlid what would be a good one?
lets say i wanted to do this.
6-columbian tetras
2-platies
6-corys
1-bulldog pleco
1-female apisto
1-gold severum
1-male betta
would that work in say a 55 gallon?
(sorry if i sound dumb but ive never kept a big cichlid)

on live aquaria it said that its a 30 gallon is the minimum for a gold severum is this true? would 1 alone work in a 29?

I wouldn't keep a severum in anything smaller than a 75. They are slow growing fish, so you could start a young one in a smaller tank, but eventually it will grow too large for a 29-30 gallon tank. They do grow almost as big as an Oscar, just taller rather than bigger around.

darn!!! i really liked how one attacked my finger and followed me around in the petstore, but i cant have a 75 gallon. a 55 would be pushing it.

i say a 55 sounds good for a SINGLE severum. but if you wanted a pair or more i would do a 75. and the stock sounds fine to.

so all those fish in a 55 would work? are golden dwarf acaras as personable? ive read on some sites that a 10 gallon is ok for just a pair.

You can house a mated spawning pair of many cichlids in a smaller tank, though I wouldn't use anything smaller than a 20. Thing is, if one gets too aggressive or the female isn't ready/willing to spawn there's nowhere for the other one to get away, and it may be killed. I'm not familiar with golden dwarf acara's, but if they're similar to curviceps they won't act much like a severum.

A densly planted tank wont stay that way for long with a Severum, I had fake plants in my 75 gal with my Severums and I had to "replant" them daily till I went barebottom and took them out.
