there are about 9 species of "Jewel" fishes of the genus Hemichromis and few of them come from 'lakes'. they are predominantly from rivers of west Africa .. most notably the Congo, Siera Leone, Angola, Guinae, Liberia, Senegal, Camaroon, Mali Upper Volta Ghana and the Republic of Benin. H. cerasogaster is from Lake Maji-ndombe (Lake Leopold). H. Frempongi is from Lake Bosumtwi in central Ghana.
