Well, I mean I know what it is.... making the water crystal clear by removing SMALL particles in the water that normally arent removed by our regular filtration (I guess thats how I would sum it up.) but what really constitutes it?

is there a particular micron sized filter/media that is required for such polishing?

I would like to make up my own sort of water polishing filter, to connect inline with my dual eheim 2213's, on the output side.
My plumbing will be all done with 1/2" PVC. So I will need to come up with a device thats easily changed/cleaned without disrupting the water flow.
so what type of media could i use for polishing water the water, and why?

something like a diatom filter will work, but those involve spending money. HOB filters are easy to modify to polish the water, you just put some filter floss in there to catch particles, and some people will use a piece of clean new t-shirt. filter floss, i think, is basically pillow stuffing. marineland emperor filters give you empty media baskets that you can fill with anything you want, and you can stuff those full of the floss. i don't know what you would do with the canisters though. make sure you have sponges on your filter intake, those make a big difference in making the water very clear.

Mag 350's come with a micron polisher for the canister, and they work wonders, reusable also.....:)

is it a 1 micron sized filter... because having a "micron" filter could mean any size really.... though you would assume 1 micron.

Im not really sure yet what im going to do either, but it will be hooked up to the output side of the filters, somewhere, and contain some form of media that will effectivly polish the water..... :)

I like the idea of a ribbed filter like the magnums, but i dont even know if the pleated filter is the polishing part of the magnum... never used one :D

filter floss however, seems like it would be easier to build for, and easier to maintain.

Micron filter.....:)

I use polyfilter as a polisher in my filters...great great results for water clarity...you do have to change it every 4 - 6 weeks and it sets me back €30 for a sheet of about 12 by 4 inches.

also has detoxifying effect on ammonia, in the event of a spike, which is nice to know.
