Hello, I am new to plants besides keeping anacharis in my turtle tank. I was just wondering what materials/necessities are needed to grow java fern. I am planning on setting up a small tank for just shrimp fry and snail fry and rearing, and growing it in there for the fry's hideout. any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Yeah, I keep mine in a tank that has 13 hours a day and is in a heavily fertilised tank and it grows like a weed. Its great. Hardy as you can get.

water. I'm not even 100% sure that that's even neccesary;) it's easy stuff, even with low light.

Ditto! I had some in a bucket with water in the basement with only ambient light from nearby tank (very little) and the temp is constant 60F. It didn't grow but it survived, didn't wilt or look bad. That was 3 months +/-.

You don't need to give it 10, or even 13 hours of light. There is no magic number of hours, per se. You just need to give it light like any other plant. 8 or more hours is fine.

It doesn't need much. You just can't bury the rhizome in the substrate or it will rot. Use fishing line or cotton thread (or staples, even) and attach it to a piece of wood or rock. This also allows you to move it for cleaning or rearranging - or finding tiny fry.
