i've recently asked my girlfriend to buy me a CO2 tank for my birthday. (She wasn't into the more "fun" gift ideas...) I figured it would be cheap...am I right? I was told by the LFS that tanks can be bought at welding shops relatively inexpensively. This will be for a 65g aquarium.

Depends on the size tank you'll be using it for. A tank used for a 5.5 gal. would last much longer than one for a 55 gal.

My tank from a welding supply store was around $70 if I remember correctly for a 15# cylinder. It has lasted my 75G for a year and a half although the first hole year I didnt inject near the level I should have. A 5# tank would have only been $10 cheaper so I went with the 15# (well that and the 15# wsa the smallest tank they currently had in stock).

The place I got mine from (Delile Oxygen Co.) also specializes in spec gas, and I opted for 'food grade' co2, meaning that its certified for human consumption. The regular welding grade stuff could have other (poisinous) welding gasses in it. They also baked and cleaned the tank and put a food grade sticker on it free. To fill my 15# with food grade co2 costs about $22 - about $10 more than the cheap welding co2 but and extra $10 for certified gas for over a years supply of co2 is well worth it imho.

BTW, you do realize how much an entire setup will cost right? My setup was around $200 and that seems pretty normal. For pressurized co2 you need tank, gas, regulator, needle valve, selenoid (opt), bubble counter, check valve, co2 air line, and some method of diffusing into tank (diffuser, reactor, powerhead, etc).

I'd guess for a 65g tank a 5# bottle would last atleast several months, but really depends on the co2 level your targeting and how effecient your diffusion is and also wether you run 24/7 or not.

.

I trade 6 bristlenose each week to the LFS for $6 each. I figure I'll have enough saved up in no time. They quoted me at 135 for a full system including a reactor. All I need is the CO2 tank. I'll need better substrate, too, but that's another thread.

$135 + tank is about exactly what mine cost (when I quoted $200 thats including the tank). Just making sure you realized that the tank was only a portion of the cost of the whole system.
