What are the most common types of cichlids?

ILOVEBETTAS

It's Cory Lover's cat!
Like ones that you can find in petstores usually... I am thinking of setting up a cichlid tank and the petstores around me don't sell a ton of cichlids...

Thanks

Are you talking about petsmart and petco. Because petsmart has like a bunch of africans, some jack dempsey, midas cichlids, Oscars, sometimes jaguar cichlids, and convicts. I would just look to make sure though.

there are probably more cichlids available then you think. they come in more shapes, colors and sizes then any other genus of fish on the market.

Kribs are common, and easy to keep, convicts even more, but will overpopulate quickly if you get a pair, bolivian rams are pretty common.
larger cichlids are oscars, green terrors, jack dempseys, red devils.

what you will find is there are a lot of 'cichlids' available

you may find tanks labeled as 'african cichlid' where you will find a mix of african cichlids.

when visiting t a LFS write some of the names down. and ask questions..cichlid-forum.com has a very nice 'profile section.

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/

check it out..you can read about temperament etc..also lists common and scientific names...btw there are hybrids like blood parrots with no scientific name.. but none the less some like them..they are an 'interesting' looking fish.
