My water in my planted tank is CRYSTAL clear during the day.
When i turn on the black light at night in my room, my tank looks like its full of milk.

What gives?

(The only thing i can see in the tank Are the GLO-FISH )

Well, black light emits ultraviolet radiation. UV radiation falls outside of the visible range on the color spectrum...it is invisible except for the effect it has on something called phosphors. Phosphors absorb radiation and use that energy to emit visible light. Different phosphors produce different colors. My guess is that your water has phosphates and possibly other dissolved organic compounds which are absorbing the UV radiation.

I know jellyfish tanks in public aquariums use black light, but that water is probably spotlessly clean and pure from the sheer volume of it...how big is your tank? Is it one of those little kit type things Tetra makes? Like a 3-5 gallon plastic thing? Because if so then the water is probably polluted, even if it looks clear to your eye.

20H High Tech Planted.
Filtered Using Fluval 4PLus on the Lowest Setting.

;)

Im going to do a big water change and see if that does anything.

This could wind up being a great way to see how much dissolved waste there is in a tank.

I'm quite sure that phosphates or organic compounds do not emit visible light when energized by the UV light. Aluminium phosphates do, which are totally different from phosphates.

Hmm, sorry if I'm wrong then...was just a guess! Chris K, do you know why the "dirty water" clouds as opposed to clean water right out of the tap?

Sorry Born, I just assumed it was one of those kit things with the black light, and they are always ridiculously small and cheap. I take it you got a fluorescent black light bulb right? I only ever found those at places like Spencer's, kinda hard to find at least in my neck of the woods.

Of course, the night clubs have to get them from somewhere right...?

Not sure if I understand the question. Anyway, dirty aquarium water contains lots of particles which scatter all spectrums of visible light. Hence, it looks cloudy (white). I don't have a PhD in physics, so I could be wrong:-)

Lowes sells blacklights- they may have the bulbs too. Organics in general glow under blacklight- just think of a hotel room bed. Or shine it on the drool spot on your pillow, not to mention so many other elephant in the room things. What your seeing is various wastes- Dissolved Solids. Your tap water has little to none- where as the water is your tank, with living orgainisms producing waste does.

And as a suggestion for seeing your glo-fish- get some blue led's, or a blue cold cathode tube- DIY moonlight mod style- you'll see the glow fish, your florcent decorations if any will glow, and you're water won't look so cloudy. Glo-fish look a lot cooler under blue light than they do under black.
