Hi there. I'm pretty sure you'll be asked what kind of fish, water parameters, list and length of treatments, etc. A clear picture would also be helpful.

i have a 180 litre juwel tank,i have
2 bosmani
2 red rainbows
red tailed black shark
3 lace gouramis
3 yo yo loaches
1 fire mouth
1 blue acara
and 2 debawi catfish
my water is hard and alkaline i do once a week water changes about 30 percent the problem seems to effect the gills always yawning and scratching on the substrate i thought it was gill flukes and treated for it with sterazin from waterlife but was no improvement im pretty sure its velvet iv tryed salting the tank for a couple of weeks and didnt seem to help much my female rainbow fish seems in bad shape always at the top of tank swimming kinder stiffly happened to my other rainbow fish then she passed away dont want to lose anymore fish if u want more details please ask thanx

Sounds like a job for Clout. It's a nuclear bomb as far as meds go(it's essentially an organophosphate pesticide), but it works quickly and surely. The Cats may not survive the treatment however. Copper will be safer, but slower and not quite as certain.

If you're in the UK I'm not sure what medications are available, but there's one called Protozin (by Waterlife) that's widely sold may be what you need. From their website:

PROTOZIN is used for the control of all protozoan and fungal infections e.g Whitespot, Fungus, Neon Tetra Disease, Velvet, Costiasis and Trichodiniasis. You will require 4 separate applications to complete the course of treatment. By adding the treatment on days 1, 2 and 3 the product safely compounds in strength and does not burden the already stressed animals with a hard hitting formula. The final dose on day 6 is a preventative measure to try and ensure the organism does not re-occur.

Good luck & keep us posted!

hi i lost my female rainbow fish other fish seem ok some have a few white patches on them the yawning seems a bit better,im not treating them at the moment as i just finished a treatment last week might try the protozin from waterlife if things dont improve i just hate dumping meds in there all the time i suppose a part of me just hopes that they can fight it off,iv had my firemouth yawning for about a year and the odd flick i wonder if it was velvet surly it wud have killed him by now? my loaches dont seem bothered at all i mean if they had velvet wud it kill them preaty fast? i dont want to keep putting meds in but something is bothering them

Sorry to hear about your fish. It is strange that it's been going on for so long. I know how you feel about medications but possibly the duration of treatments haven't been quite long enough to totally eradicate, causing it reoccur, perhaps with a renewed resistance. Hope things turn around for you soon.

another one of my rainbow fish is not doing to well yesterday it looked like he was being sick looked like he was coughing up food it seems so centred around the gills could it be velvet or something else,i have sand in my aquarium could it be sand particles that is irritating them? im considering getting rid of them and starting again as its been going on for so long its a shame cause it really does put me off the hobby iv spent so much money on them to no avail.
