so.. this is a bit of an interesting problem

I had 2 black mystery snails in my 55g community tank... and now there is only one

I know this is an aquatic snail.. so I am assuming it wouldnt make it far if it escaped

the biggest fish in the tank is a female beta.. I know she couldnt eat a full grown mystery snail..

do these snails burrow at all?

WTF happened to my other snail? lol

I would check around the aquarium as well. I have heard that they might wander if they have a way out and they can survive for a while out of water I am told.
Otherwise you would at least find a shell??? Betta might eat a tiny one or antagonize one untill it dies but not swallow a full grown one shell and all.
I wish you luck in finding you missing snail.

They can sometimes bury themselves in the substrate but usually you will see some of the shell poking out. More likely a full grown snail climbed out of the tank.

well... it is an open topped tank... but there is a HUGE lip on it (like 3" wide) because its an acrylic tank... not saying it couldnt-- but it would have had to go upside down for quite a ways

and I dont see a slime trail either

they can still get out fairly easily. It happens at a local chain store hear all the time. They keep them in a tank with about 4 inches of water, and at the top there is the same lip you mentioned, maybe even bigger, and I always find a dead snail or two around the tank, makes me sad:( I never would have thought they could have made it out if I didn't see the dead snails my self.

look around the outside of the tank to see if he got out, if you can't find anything I'd say do some hunting in your tank

Could have gotten out. Do you have sandy substrate? Mine burron in the sand sometimes. Man where did you find black mysteries??? I am so jealous! If you find him send him to me :D

Yes, check in the substrate - mine hide in there too! Also if you have any decorations look up inside them. Even if it is a small whole - you'd be amazed where they hide! He/she may very well have climbed out and wandered a while away because they breath oxygen through their little funnels! Hope you find it soon :(

Do you have the water level dropped?... if its a she, she might have been looking for a place to lay her clutch.... I Hope you find He/She safe and sound.
