I am partially convinced to buy a uv sterilizer to help with my algae blooms. Currently I dont have a canister filter. What is the difference between inline and hang on instalation?:werd:

uv sterilizer for algae blooms....in reading posts on this forum, it seems that every time this solution is posted the suggestions are to find some other means to control the algae, such as food supply in the water, excess lighting, snails, "maintenance" fish, etc. I do not have any experience with UV nor have I ever had problems with algae blooms. For the sake of my own knowledge, what is causing you to lean in this direction?

sometimes you just can't figure out what's going on.. as is my case. i suspect worn out bulbs in mine, but i've been battling green water for 3 months now, and have turned the UV route. I'll definitely post results when i see them.

I have a uv sterilizer, I got it for ich outbreaks. Anyway, I find that it actually causes algae to grow. I don't know if it's because it warms the water or what. The water *is* crystal clear during use, I'm referring to algae that grows on the glass, etc. Is it only good for green water but not other algae's?

UV kills anything free floating in the water, so floating algae that causes green water will be eliminated, as well as other bacteria, etc. but algae attached to the glass, plants, etc. will not be killed by running the UV.

I have south american cichlids (1 Oscar, 1Flower Horn, 1 Jaguar, 1 Jack dempsey) they are messy eaters. I do give my tank a substatial amount of light. I do not want to change that. Also the sterilizer kills parasites and bacteria, that will held cut down on diseases.
