i have read that this stuff makes plants grow like crazy. does anyone use the stuff? is it kinda like flourish excell??? i have 16oz of blackwater laying around and was maybe going to use it on my soon to be planted tank.

I dont think it is anything like flourish excel, because i know that blackwater doesnt have co2 in it. I would just get flourish excel, or some other plant fertilizer. From what i remember, blackwater is just trace elements and stuff.. Might help plants from the blackwater region maybe? Ive never seen it being sold as a fertilizer.

from their site "Blackwater Extract contains trace elements, vitamins and extract of peat. It replicates blackwater conditions by creating clear, “natural”, Amazon-biotope conditions in the aquarium. Blackwater Extract promotes fish activity levels and is an excellent conditioner for all soft-water fish including Discus, Angelfish, Tetras and Killifish."

So i would say no.
Plus, if it was better than regular fertilizers, the compant would probably mention it.

since it is partially derived from peat, there will be plenty of organic carbon in the mixture. i dont know what excell is made out of, is it clear? i believe that they actually might be quite similiar. who knows......

Peat does not contain many nutrients. Blackwater extract is used mainly to recreate the murky water conditions that make cardinals, rummy nose, and angels happy. Its not a plant food.

peat doesn't contain many nutrients, but the extract might. peat gives off tannins and other organic acids all which contain carbon and could possibly be used by plants.

straight from the bottle: naturally chelated iron, vitamins and other organic compuouds....for building roots and green plant growth but does not promote algae growth...... if your aquarium has plants they will benefit greatly from the use of kent black water expert ........

I was told by somebody on a Betta forum to use blackwater for my fish to help with their slimecoat, especially for my Betta.
