TRUE freshwater crabs

then here i found a large list of Brackish crabs that are semi readily available.

The reason i beleive there is such a lack of freshwater crabs is because the nich of a bottom dwelling scavenger\predator is filled by crawfish, shrimp and prawn. Because of this they can't compete and go belly up.

If you have found truely non brakih crabs then please tell us.

you r right but they are more of an amphibios(misspelled) crab that goes in freshwater.

Ok, here's what I could find... although most (if not all) doesn't seem to be in the hobby yet.

This is a freshwater crab information site. Has 25 true freshies throughout... some of the african crabs are from Lake Tang!

We need some of these in the hobby... I'm a crayfish nut, and I could go for some freshwater crabs.

Fiddler and red claw crabs are freshwater though they need a shallower tank and usually access to the surface, although this guy says they can live on the bottom indefinitely...http://www.****************/catalog_pages/misc_critters/crabs.htm

Fiddlers and red claws are neither freshwater nor fully aquatic. Most crabs you'll see are land dwellers that needs water, though a lot of petstores simply sell them as aquarium pets. I've seen halloween crabs sold in tanks with platies and guppies.

and most fidler crabs prefer brakish but can be aklimated(misspelling again).

and yes they really like having a place to escape to.

Fiddlers can't be acclimated to freshwater.

Something that does come close to a freshwater aquarium-suitable crab would be aegla, which aren't really crabs, but do look similar.

redclaws may live in freshwater for a while, but need brackish water. I have had 3, 1 escaped, 1 died while moulting(in freshwater) and the 3rd is doing well, but hasn't moulted in over 2 months... I've read they should moult closer to once a month. redclaws absolutely need and want time above water. they spend at least 50% of their time in air if it is available. that guy claiming otherwise is a moron.
