Hey guys and gals -

Am new and don't know anything about equipment beyond the simplest things. I purchased a used SW setup off of CraigsList and have a problem. With the equipment came two Cascade 1500s. There is no filter media except for BioBalls. Could someone tell me how to use these? Also, do I need sponge pads, carbon, floss pads, etc?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I purchased:

(1) 120 gallon Aquarium with Stand (60x18.25x26)
(1) Undergravel filters for 120 Gallon Aquariums
(2) Cascade 1500 Canister Filters (200GPH)
(1) Remora Pro Aqua C Protein Skimmer with Mag Drive Pump
(4) Fluorescent lights with ballasts
(2) 250W Metal Hallide Lights
(1) PFO Dual Lighting Ballast (250W)
(1) Unopened bucket of 200G Oceanic Sea Salt
(1) 120lbs of Look Alive Rock
(1) RHS-10ATC Portable Refractometer
(1) 10 gallon aquarium with light and filter

Dump the Bioballs (nitrate factory) & replace them with live rock rubble, you can use them as a refugeum. The other upi can put cheato in it & put a light over it. Forget the UG filter. What's "Look Alive Rock"? Is it real rock?

Sounds like the guy you bought it from was filtering a SW tank like a FW one. Totally wrong.

Agree to get rid of the UG filter. If you are doing FO you will be able to get away with 1200 gph(10x) for your flow.. If you going to do a FOWLR you can get away with 1800 gph(15x) if your going to do a reef setup then you'll need 3600 gph (30x) or there abouts anyway. If you took his Live Sand or if he had Crushed Coral, ditch it and start new. There are just to many issues with used sand for you to take the chances of it.

Look Alive Rock?? What is that? Is that AgroCrete rock (rock made out of cement) or what exactly. How long was it in his tank or out of his tank?

Look Alive Rock

:huh:It is a product from CaribSea. It looks pretty good and is heavy enough to stack securely.

Pretty sure it has been out of his tank for about 8 months. Not planning to use the UGF as I am going with blast sand and LS. He had it set up as a SW FO.

Going to start out with a FO tank until I can get the hang of it.

Thanks for the help.

I'd toss that fake rock & go with "real" live rock. That is going to be the major filtration for your tank, other than a skimmer. Look to see if you have a local reef club near you for good deals at: www.reefcentral.com.
